Crews battle fire at Chatham scrapyard

Firefighters from multiple stations battled a large blaze at a Chatham scrapyard on Wednesday.

Crews responded to A. Gold and Sons, located on Queen’s Line, west of Bloomfield Road, where a scrap vehicle on fire resulted in heavy black smoke blanketing the surrounding areas.

In a social media post, Chatham-Kent fire officials said there were no injuries reported at this time.

The fire was extinguished later in the afternoon, with crews tending to various hot spots.

A command truck, as well as several pumpers, ladder trucks and tankers attended the scene, along with other supporting vehicles.

Officials described the blaze as a “complex” fire, with people urged to avoid the area, as traffic was snarled due to the road closure.

Residents in the surrounding areas were also advised to close their doors and windows because of the smoke.

Neither a cause, nor damage estimate, were immediately available.

This story will be updated.
