SVT/Kantar Public: Support for the Sweden Democrats is increasing

The measurement was carried out during the last two weeks of August when the terror threat level was raised and several Koran burnings took place. The only party that is moving forward in the survey is the Sweden Democrats.

– I think voters appreciate the clear signal from SD that Sweden should be an open democratic state that is characterized by a freedom to actually use the freedoms found in our constitutions, says Sweden Democrats party secretary Mattias Bäckström Johansson.

SD in focus during the Koran crisis

However, he does not believe that the so-called Koran crisis alone can explain the rise in public opinion, but also refers to the fact that the party has made the government implement many Sweden-democratic policies.

Support for the SD is now at 19.7 percent, which is their highest rating in a Kantar Public survey since October last year.

– It is close to the election result, which was just over 20 percent, and it shows that SD has not lost the discussion about the chairman of the justice committee or the Koran crisis, but rather strengthened its position, says Toivo Sjörén, head of opinion at Kantar Public.

Otherwise, the movements in public opinion are small. No changes for individual lots are statistically guaranteed compared to the previous month.

“Tough position for C”

Three parties end up in the survey during the parliamentary deadlock: L, KD and C. The Center Party’s support of 3.9 percent is the lowest in six months.

– The Center Party is in a tough situation. They have a very thin profile and are largely not strong on any issues at all. You need to have at least one issue where you are really strong, and they don’t have that, says Toivo Sjörén.

Sweden’s largest party is still the Social Democrats, who in this survey receive support of 37.6 percent, and the opposition thus maintains a clear advantage in public opinion. In September, the difference between the blocks is 8.6 percent, compared to 11 percent in August.
