BO Åhrström from Örnsköldsvik won this year’s bus driver championship.
“It is the ultimate proof that what I am doing is right and that the education is right,” he says in a press release from Transportföretagen.
The competition was decided in Arlandastad north of Stockholm. The 20 finalists competed in stages such as reversing, manoeuvring test, meeting, economical driving and disaster management.
BO Åhrström won ahead of Konstantin Goryainov from Östersund and Nedal Moutlak from Gothenburg.
“I am happy and proud to have taken home the victory in a tough competition in today’s starting field. It’s like winning the fine TV prize Kristallen, but for heavy passenger transport,” says the winner.
The purpose of the bus driver championship is to draw attention to drivers and their skills – and to attract people to the profession.
According to the Transport companies’ report Tempen, the bus industry has a total recruitment need of 8,600 people, of which 8,100 are bus drivers.
FACT Bus driver of the year 2023
The Bus Driver Championship is organized for the 20th year in a row.
This year, over 500 people were registered to write the first theory test. Afterwards, 20 women and 20 men went on to a second theory test.
Finally, 20 finalists remained who fought for the title Bus Driver of the Year 2023.
The winner was awarded a gift check and a glass trophy designed by Martin Ehrensvärd.
The competition is organized by Sweden’s Bus Company in collaboration with the newspapers Resforum and Trafikforum.
