Steadfast heroes are Gerard Butler’s passion. At least that’s what his roles in films like 300 or Angel Has Fallen suggest. In his most disgusting role in Criminal Squad, however, things are very different. Here, Butler is a dirty, corrupt cop who will use any means to get his job done. In Criminal Squad (original title: Den of Thieves), a group of former elite soldiers plans to raid the US Federal Reserve in San Francisco. After the bloody attack on a money transporter, police bloodhound Nick O’Brien (Butler) is put on the criminals and tries to stop them put a stop to it with brutal methods.
Thanks to its bank robbery plot, the duel dramaturgy and its captivatingly staged action scenes, Criminal Squad becomes frequent compared to Michael Mann’s masterpiece Heat. In the end, it may not quite reach the milestone for many, but it still rises far above the genre average. The action film received only average reviews (via Metacritic ), but was a moderate success at the box office (via The Numbers ). Since 2018 there are plans for Criminal Squad 2, which according to the deadline has already been shot and brings back Butler as O’Brien, among other things. The film is set to take place in Europe and will hit theaters sometime in 2024.
