In Starfield you have a wide range of companions that you can take with you on your journey. You can find out what companions are, how many are available and how you get them in our overview.
What are companions? As the name suggests, companions are computer-controlled characters in Starfield who can accompany you on your travels.
They mainly help you out in battle and offer you additional firepower. But they can also help you with your carrying capacity and take one or the other item away and stow it away.
How many companions are there? Bethesda herself spoke in an interview about the multitude of companions that Starfield has. There was talk of over 20 named characters who can follow you, help in battle, and carry your burden.

Vasco
Where can I find this companion? Vasco is a robot that you will automatically meet in the first mission, “One Small Step”.
Sarah Morgan
Where can I find this companion? Sarah can be met at the end of your first mission, One Small Step. She is the boss of the Constellation and will receive you.
Sam Coe
Where can I find this companion? Sam can be found relatively early in the main story during the mission “The Empty Nest”.
Andreja
Where can I find this companion? You can find Andreja during the Into the Unknown quest when Vladimir sends you to check on her.
Barrett
Where can I find this companion? Barrett can only be recruited from the “Return to Vectera” mission.
