Steven Spielberg’s film received rave reviews (via Metacritic), was a box office hit (via The Numbers) and won seven Oscars. Nevertheless, opponents accused the film of inappropriate handling of the topic of the Holocaust.

Director Michael Haneke (Dasweiße Band) described the film’s portrayal of the gas chambers as “dumb“, his famous colleague Jean-Luc Godard accused Spielberg of insulting Schindler’s impoverished widow to have enriched (via rogerebert.com).

To what extent Spielberg’s critics are right, everyone has to decide for themselves. In any case, Schindler’s list is unique. Its prominent place in film history will not surprise Haneke and Godard either.
