Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants the Eritrean migrants involved in Saturday’s violent clash in Tel Aviv to be deported immediately.
The country is considering deporting 1,000 Eritreans, according to the prime minister.
Netanyahu’s statement comes a day after hundreds of supporters of the Eritrean regime and opposition compatriots clashed. Over 160 people are reported to have been injured in the confrontations.
– We want sharp measures against the rioters, including the immediate deportation of those who participated, Netanyahu said during an emergency government meeting.
He then requested that ministers present plans “for the removal of all other illegal infiltrators”.
Israel cannot, under international law, forcibly transfer migrants back to a country where their lives or freedom are at risk. Netanyahu said on Sunday that he did not think it would be a problem to deport supporters of the Eritrean regime.
