The rivalry between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone represents perhaps the greatest screen rivalry of all time. For more than a decade they competed in films such as Rambo II – The Order, The Phantom Commando or The City Cobra for the biggest biceps, the rudest sayings and most fatalities. The Contest of 80’s Action Icons started when they first met in 1977.

As Stallone tells Variety, they met at the 1977 Golden Globe Awards. Stallone’s Rocky was nominated for six awards as a huge hit, Schwarzenegger was hoping for an award for his role in the indie film Mister Universe. But they didn’t like each other from the start.

When Rocky went empty-handed in one category after the other, Schwarzenegger apparently only grinned extremely maliciously in Stallone’s direction. And finally his collar burst:
I got no best actor and I thought, ‘This is a nightmare.’ And he [lachte nur höhnisch]. Then I won for best picture. I took a huge flower pot and threw it in his direction. With that the gauntlet fell. That started a ten-year struggle.
Conan the Barbarian and Rambo turned the two into action stars, who from the mid-80s were among the most successful actors of the decade. Their enmity was legendary. Among other things, Sylvester Stallone only took on his worst role because of Arnold Schwarzenegger. “The whole galaxy was too small for both of us‘ Stallone explains to Variety with a laugh. “We now realize that we are actually the same person.”
