2008 was a pivotal year for the superhero blockbuster. Iron Man and The Dark Knight hit theaters and inspired millions for Marvel and DC. The award for the most unusual superhero though went to Will Smith as Hancock 13 years ago. The film is on TV today.
On TV: Will Smith’s superhero was crushed between Iron Man and The Dark Knight
Hancock drinks, swears and for the most part cares little about the fate of the world. That is exactly what makes him unusual then as now. Many genre fans are now criticizing interchangeable character drawings and storylines at Marvel and DC. Hancock is the ideal counterexample. But 2008 was different.
Director Peter Berg’s (Collateral) blockbuster was a financial success (via The Numbers). But the signs of the times simply stood against him. With DC and Marvel, two gigantic franchise machines burst onto the big screen. The bombast of The Dark Knight and Iron Man established the most successful film universes of all time and pushed Hancock out of memory. Smith’s co-star Charlize Theron still wants Hancock 2, according to the comic book.
When is Hancock on TV?
Hancock is coming this Saturday, September 2, 2023, at 10:30 p.m. on RTL II. In addition to Smith and Theron, Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) can be seen in front of the camera.
