It was on August 24 that 21-year-old Ta’Kiya Young was suspected of shoplifting from a store in Blendon Township in Ohio.
Recently released footage from the officers’ body cameras shows an officer at the driver’s side window, repeatedly demanding that Young “get out of the car.” She can be seen accelerating slowly to try to drive away when the police shout for her to stop.
Seconds later, a shot is heard.
“The officer who was directly in the path of the oncoming car fired a shot through the front windshield,” Police Chief John Bleford said in a statement.
Ta’Kiya Young dies on the spot along with her unborn daughter.
“This is indefensible”
The incident has received a lot of attention in the United States, where the police are once again criticized for excessive violence.
– She was an unarmed pregnant mother of two. This is inexcusable, said the family’s attorney, Sean Walton, the day after the accident.
When the 21-year-old’s death was noticed online, it didn’t even take 48 hours before more than SEK 70,000 had been collected for her family.
Ta’Kiya’s grandmother, Nadine Young, describes her granddaughter as a family-oriented, funny and loving big sister and mother.
– She was so excited about this little girl. She had her two little boys, but she was so happy to have a girl. She is so missed.
