Free fall for the restaurant industry – close to 500 bankruptcies since the turn of the year

August was another dark month for the restaurant industry. The increase in the number of bankruptcies was in itself less clear than earlier this summer, but a further 44 companies in hotels and restaurants went bankrupt. Now the crisis is feared to gain further momentum when many people renew their mortgages, the economy becomes even tougher and restaurant visits are deprioritized.

– It is an extremely tough situation, says Carl Henrik Forssbeck, founder of the Bores restaurant chain whose parent company has gone bankrupt.

– It is a tough industry with very small margins, but it has been wonderful for me for 19 years. It is only the last year that has been a bit busy, says the company’s other founder, younger brother Carl Gustaf Forssbeck.

In the clip above, the brothers talk about what it’s like to go from a chain with 13 restaurants to now standing in the kitchen without a salary.
