Many buffs in Baldur’s Gate 3 are only temporary, but there are also 21 permanent buffs. MeinMMO tells you what they can do and how you can get them.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 you have the opportunity to strengthen your characters with permanent advantages. You keep these benefits even if you decide to change your character’s class.

The adventures in Faerûn lead you into demanding battles that pose a real challenge. These bonuses can be invaluable, especially on the “Tactician” difficulty level, and give you a boost in sticky situations.

  • Penalty on Perception checks
  • Disadvantage on attack rolls when fighting witches.
  • Visually, you get an impressive dull eye.
  • How to get the buff: Allow Aunt Ethel at the Tea House to do her best to address your parasite problem.

  • Once your hit points fall below 30%, you gain a +2 bonus on attack rolls and Wisdom saving throws.

    Summon Familiar: Scratches

    What is the dog doing?

  • He always brings you random items, sometimes useful things like healing potions.
  • Scratch can support you in battle as an ally. He can die, but you can summon him again and again.

    Arabella’s shadow entanglement

    What is the buff doing?

  • You get the Entangle ability, which you can cast on an undead or shadow creature.
  • How to get the buff: Successfully complete the quest “Save Arabella” in Act 1. Tell her the sad news of her dead parents when you meet them near the House of Healing in the Shadowcursed Lands.

    Potion of Eternal Power

  • Permanent +2 strength

  • Advantage on Intelligence saving throws.
  • How to get the buff: Solve the puzzle in Mind Flayer Colony. Place the waking mind in the archive canister and erase the spirit from the female elf head.

    Lasting benefits from Act 3

    What is the buff doing?

  • +2 to an attribute score of your choice.
  • But you sacrifice -2 to another value.
  • Attribute can be increased above 20.
  • How to get the buff: In the House of Sorrow you will find the Mirror of Loss. say a prayer Then sacrifice either the Knowledge of the Necromancy of Thay or an ability score. The debuff can be removed again with “Remove Curse”.

    What is the buff doing?

  • Your blood is now flammable and will explode on contact with fire.
  • How to get the buff: Have Araj Oblodra draw blood from you in Act 2. You can find them in the Towers of Moonrise. Then, in Act 3, allow Araj to draw your blood again near the Blushing Mermaid tavern. After that you will get a potion that you have to drink.

    Disgusting laughter

    What is the buff doing?

  • Per long rest you can cast the spell “Tasha’s hideous laughter”.
  • The spell allows you to put a targeted creature into a fit of laughter. The creature stops laughing and cannot take a bonus action, action, or reaction.
  • Attacks against the creature (within 10 feet) have an advantage.
  • How to get the buff: Complete the “Help the Cursed Monk” quest. You can find his amulet in the Grymforge. Bring it to the Temple of the Open Hand. Accept the curse of the monk to learn the ability.

    The Tharchiate Code: Blessings

    What is the buff doing?

  • You gain additional hit points once per long rest.
  • How to get the buff: Read the Tharchiate Codex to get the buff. First you will be cursed, if you remove this you will get the buff that grants you additional hitpoints per long rest. To read the final page of Thay’s Necromancy, you need the Tharchiate Codex.

    What is the buff doing?

  • +1d4 bonus on attack rolls and saving throws.
  • How to get the buff: Pay 5000 gold to NPC Boney in the Circus of the Last Days. He will then build a statue of you and you will receive the permanent buff as soon as you lie down.
