The start of the new school year promises to be financially complicated for many households. In September, the General Directorate of Public Finance (DGFiP) adjusts the withholding tax rate. Since the introduction of this levy directly on the salary, the organization sends employers the rate corresponding to each employee. 1er of this month, as every year, the tax authorities transmit the new scale -if there has been an adjustment-, after studying the last tax return, which takes into account all of the person’s income (salaries and other s ‘There is).

Thus, without doing anything, the new rate is applied to the payslip for the month of September, which can thus lead to a reduction in the net received even though the salary has not changed. The decrease can thus range from a few euros to a few tens of euros, depending on the salary and the rate.

To find out if your withholding tax rate will increase, go to the tax website, log on to “Your private space”, click on the “Withholding tax” tab, then on “Consult your rates ” at the bottom of the left column. Here will then be entered the next withholding tax rate which will be applicable to you from September 1st. Perhaps you yourself will have the pleasant surprise of seeing your rate decrease and, therefore, have a higher net salary!

This system, if it allows you to pay your taxes throughout the year, can slow down some, in particular for the sake of confidentiality on additional income. It is thus possible to prevent his true tax rate from being transmitted and, therefore, to increase his net salary received each month, even if it will be necessary to go to the cash register more brutally at the end of the year.

To do this, you should go to the tax website, log on to your personal space and click on the “Withholding tax” tab. There, you have to tick “I opt not to transmit my rate to my employer.” This will not prevent withholding tax. However, the rate that will be applied will only be calculated from your salary received in the company for which you work. The rest will have to be indicated to the tax authorities at the time of the 2024 tax declaration.
