Norway is closing its embassy in Mali’s capital Bamako due to the security situation in the country. The Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anniken Huitfeldt (Labor Party), announced this.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry refers, among other things, to the two military coups carried out in Mali in 2020 and 2021.

The embassy will be closed before the turn of the year, reports Norwegian NTB.

“The fact that we are closing the embassy in Bamako does not mean that we are ending our involvement in the Sahel,” says Huitfeldt in a press release. The Sahel is the designation for the region south of the Sahara.

The press service at the Swedish Foreign Ministry in Stockholm has been asked if the Norwegian decision affects the Swedish diplomatic presence in Bamako.
