John Wick is the defining action film series of the past decade. Ever since Keanu Reeves traveled the world as a hitman to avenge the murder of his dog, Hollywood has been trying to repeat the recipe for success. Of all the John Wick clones currently hitting cinemas, The Equalizer series is the best.
The first part came in 2014, followed four years later by the sequel The Equalizer 2. Another five years later we are now experiencing the grand finale of the action frenzy with Denzel Washington in the eponymous leading role. The Equalizer 3 – The Final Chapter starts today, on August 31, 2023in German cinemas.

If we go by Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, The Equalizer 3 is the best part of the series. The film currently has 61 out of 100 points from 17 reviews on Metacritic. The film has a 70 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 33 meetings were counted.

The Equalizer 3: The Final Chapter – Trailer (German) HD
The words of David Fear on Rolling Stone sound particularly promising Washington’s strong performance emphasize and come to the conclusion that he says goodbye with a climax. Meanwhile, Fran Hoepfner writes at The Wrap that part 3 feels bigger than the previous ones and looks a lot better.
The cinematographer is Robert Richardson, known for his collaborations with Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. The story takes place before dreamlike scenery of Italy from where the mafia is up to mischief and, according to Hollywood Reporter critic Frank Scheck, culminates in one “stunning brutal” Final.
A more critical classification is given by our FILMSTARTS colleague Pascal Reis, who only awards two out of five stars.
With The Equalizer 3 – The Final Chapter, the series comes to a point where there doesn’t seem to be much new to tell about Robert McCall. Denzel Washington does damage limitation with his natural charisma, but the fight against the mafia is still very generic and the action even manages without any highlight sets, despite some grim violent spikes. The Equalizer 3 was staged by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), who also directed the previous films. Next to Washington, Dakota Fanning plays the second major leading role in the film. The two appeared together 19 years ago in Tony Scott’s action thriller Mann unter Feuer.
