Suncor said in a post Tuesday to Sarnia-Lambton Alerts that its refinery in Sarnia is “experiencing periods of increased flaring.”
The flaring is “due to an interruption in service from a third-party provider,” the post said.
“This is expected to continue through the remainder of the week until service can be restored.”
Suncor wouldn’t provide additional details about the interruption in service or its impact on the refinery.
“We do not provide real-time status updates on any of our operations,” Suncor spokesperson Leithan Slade said by email.
The post to Sarnia-Lambton Alerts said the company had contacted Ontario’s Spills Action Centre.
Suncor’s Sarnia site is an 85,000-barrel-a-day refinery located on the St. Clair Parkway using mostly Western Canadian oil to make gasoline, kerosene, jet and diesel fuels, asphalt and petrochemical feedstock, according to the company’s website.
The Sarnia refinery, which began operating in 1952, has about 500 employees and contractors onsite, the company said.
