Here, 20 miles of river will be restored after the timber rafting

– It is the largest water conservation project we have done in Dalarna, says Andreas Skarmyr, freshwater biologist at the Dalarna County Administrative Board.

Around Fuluälven there are more than 20 miles of flowing water that was partially “destroyed” in connection with the timber rafting that ended there more than 50 years ago.

The upper part of the Västerdalälven

An extensive “repair” of the river system, which is the upper part of Västerdalälven’s flow, is now planned.

– There is a focus on restoring the river channel itself and tributaries, but also the adjacent wetlands that were dug up, says Andreas Skarmyr.

Needs support from the EU

The job will start in the summer of 2025 at the earliest, but the financing is not completely ready. According to the plan, it is about government money but mainly support from the EU.

The fact that there are now plans for a reconstruction of the power plant at Ejforsen, which is located in a side channel to the Fuluälven, is not a concern for the restoration of the watercourse.

– It is possible to do both, says Andreas Skarmyr.
