Chatham crash sends four to hospital

Four people were taken to hospital with various injuries after a serious crash in Chatham on Saturday afternoon.

At approximately 4:15 pm, emergency crews responded to Grand Avenue West at Woods Street for a collision involving two vehicles and a pedestrian.

Chatham-Kent police said preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the pickup truck was heading eastbound on Grand Avenue West. The truck then proceeded over the curb and onto the sidewalk on the south side of the roadway.

“The vehicle struck a 19-year-old pedestrian walking on the sidewalk. The pedestrian received only minor injuries,” police said in a release.

The truck proceeded to hit a utility pole, veer back onto Grand Avenue and collide with a GMC Envoy, which was traveling westbound. The collision caused both vehicles to strike another utility pole just east of Woods Street.

At the scene, which was closed to traffic for several hours, police told The Daily News the investigation was ongoing and that four people were transported to hospital.

The driver of the truck, a 40-year-old Comber man, suffered injuries that are not believed to be life threatening. The passenger of the truck, a 41-year-old Comber woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Windsor Regional Hospital.

The driver of the Envoy, a 69-year-old Chatham man, also suffered injuries not believed to be life threatening, and was transported to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance. The passenger, a 65-year-old Chatham woman, suffered serious injuries and was transported to London Health Sciences Center where she is listed in stable condition.

The traffic management unit has taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Josh Flikweert at [email protected] or 519-355-1092.
