170 minute action masterpiece that got a sequel after 27 years

One of the masterpieces of 1990s Hollywood cinema is coming to TV today. Running for 170 minutes, Michael Mann’s Heat offers a legendary acting duet between Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and, at the end, one of the best shootouts in film history.

What Heat (and Heat 2) is all about

Robert De Niro takes on the role of Neil McCauley, a criminal who goes undetected in Los Angeles thanks to his well thought out schemes. To finally catch him, obsessed cop Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) sets himself on his trail. When McCauley one last big robbery plans, Hanna sees his opportunity and wants to arrest the gangster.

Heat

In 1995, Heat inspired with its urban warfare, complete with shrill gunshot noises, the melancholic gangster story and the wide ensemble of memorable characters.

Without spoiling too much, Heat ends his story quite clearly. In 2022 the book Heat 2 by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner was published, which therefore functions as the sequel and prequel to the film. On the one hand, the stories of Hanna and Chris Shiherlis (in the first film: Val Kilmer) are continued, on the other hand, the plot jumps back to 1988, where the younger McCauley and his crew in Chicago caused a stir.

One Adaptation of Heat 2 is in development and Adam Driver is in talks to play the young Neil McCauley, Deadline announced in early August.
