Faith Kipyegon shone again at the Budapest Worlds this Saturday August 26th. After taking gold in the 1,500m, she also won the 5,000m. Her rival, Dutch Sifan Hassan, finished second and couldn’t do anything to contain the Kenyan.

Faith Kipyegon came to these World Championships in Budapest as a champion, she leaves as a queen. Already crowned in the 1,500m, she won the 5,000m on Saturday August 26 ahead of her great Dutch rival, Sifan Hassan. In 14:53.88, Kipyegon (29) won a 4th world title ahead of Hassan (14:54.11) and another Kenyan, Beatrice Chebet (14’54”33).
Only the American Bernard Lagat had already achieved the 1,500/5,000 m double in 2007 in Osaka (Japan). Best runner of the season, and surely one of the best in history with her two Olympic titles (2016 and 2021), Kipyegon is having an incredible year. After her victory over the 1,500, she had declared “ run for history »she marked her a little more with this performance.
A year full of records
On Tuesday, she had already won the 1,500m gold in Budapest, as in 2017 and 2022. She seized the 1,500m world record this season (3:49.11 in Florence on June 2), the 5,000m (14:05.20 in Paris on June 9) and the mile (about 1,616m, 4:07.64 in Monaco on July 21). On Saturday, she accelerated perfectly in the last 400 meters before resisting her rivals in the final straight.
Sifan Hassan, engaged in three events in Budapest (1,500 m, 5,000 m and 10,000 m), can be smiling. After a spectacular fall last Saturday just before the finish of the 10,000m, when she was playing for the title, the Dutchwoman made up for it by winning bronze in the 1,500m then silver in the 5,000m to total six medals world.
