If you like horror, you can’t avoid the Shining. Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece (2001) is considered a milestone in the genre. Many fans were all the more surprised when 39 years later Doctor Sleeps Awakening actually made it into the cinema as a sequel. The sequel is now available on Amazon Prime Video.
At Amazon Prime: horror sequel that is just as disturbing as its predecessor
In The Shining, young Danny (Danny Lloyd in the 1980 film) narrowly escaped the ax of his insane father (Jack Nicholson), who had taken up residence with his child and wife at the remote Overlook Hotel. Nearly 30 years later, adult Dan (Ewan McGregor) is still traumatized, suppressing his memories and his telepathic gifts with alcohol.
In 2019, he is cured of his addiction and learns of a sinister group called The True Knot, who tell telepaths like him the psychic essence. With that they can extend their lifespan and theoretically become ancient. Dan finally stands in the way of the soul vampires’ cruel desires and even returns to the Overlook Hotel to do it.
Doctor Sleep may not have the dense atmosphere of Kubrick’s masterpiece, but it’s still a good horror film. Genre veteran Mike Flanagan (Haunted Hill House) also shows scenes of appalling cruelty, which will disturb many fans just as much as the blood fountains from the famous predecessor.
