A new chapter in the story of the Loch Ness monster could be written this weekend.
Scientists and monster hunters will set out on the Scottish lake for two days – to carry out the biggest search in over 50 years.
– The weekend provides an opportunity to search the water in a way that has never been done before, says Paul Nixon, director of the Loch Ness Centre.
This weekend, scientists and enthusiasts are gathering in Scotland for the biggest search for the legendary Loch Ness monster in over 50 years. A Loch Ness center has teamed up with a group of volunteer monster hunters to use new technology to try to find “Nessie”, as the beast is also called.
New technology in the form of drones with thermal cameras, as well as hydrophones that can pick up sounds underwater will be used to look for evidence that the beast exists.
– It has always been our goal to record, study and analyze all kinds of natural behavior and phenomena that may be more challenging to explain, says organizer Alan McKenna according to AFP.
Over 1,000 people have seen “Nessie”
Over 1,000 people have claimed to have seen the Loch Ness monster over the years and the area in the Scottish Highlands has become a popular tourist attraction because of the myth. Loch Ness brings in millions of pounds in tourist revenue each year, according to the news agency.
The freshwater lake, which has the same name as the beast, stretches over 36 kilometers and is Britain’s largest lake by volume.
Several large search efforts have been carried out over the years. In 2018, researchers conducted a DNA survey in the water to determine which organisms and animals are in the lake. The researchers found nothing to indicate that the Loch Ness monster exists.

In an interview with BBC Nixon also states that the search will be streamed so that people from all over the world can participate.
– We cannot save ourselves in the face of what we can find, he says.
TV4 Nyheterna has spoken to Tora Wall, folklorist and author, who believes that the great search is being carried out because there is new technology.
– But I also think it’s about the fact that it’s a troubled world. Then we have a tendency to want to seek the fantastic. You want to find something else in the world that is more enchanted to think about, she says.
