The District Court of Helsinki decided on Torden’s detention on July 21 based on the Aliens Act, and the District Court of Itä-Uusimaa decided on Friday to continue the detention.
The man is suspected of participating in the activities of a terrorist group and supporting the activities of a terrorist group in the Donbas region of Ukraine. The suspected terrorist crimes took place in eastern Ukraine in the regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
According to a message from the Russian embassy, the consulate received information about the Russian’s arrest and Ukraine’s extradition demand on August 23 from the police. Torden contacted the embassy the same day.
The embassy says it has reached an agreement to meet the man in prison in the next few days.
According to media reports, Ukraine demands that Finland hand over Torden.
Foreign minister Elina Valtonen did not take a position on Torden’s handover in ‘s first morning.
– The handover decisions are secret, and I cannot comment on them. The authorities are of course on the case. The process is handled with respect for own law as well as international agreements and law, Valtonen said.
