The mayor Francisco Tamariz of the city of La Libertad in Ecuador was reportedly the victim of an assassination attempt last Friday evening. Tamariz says 30 shots were fired at his vehicle.
“They tried to kill me,” he writes on X.
Presidential candidate murdered
A couple of weeks ago, presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot dead in connection with a campaign meeting in the capital Quito, and on Monday a local politician was killed in the province of Esmeraldas.
Ecuador holds presidential elections on Sunday.
