Eyewitnesses said that many of the Cruise’s robotic taxis closed the intersections for about 15 minutes, raising “concern that emergency vehicles could prevent access to the area”.
In a statement on social media platform X, the company noted that they are working on the problem, noting that the music festival “causes wireless bandwidth restrictions on robot taxis.”
“SHOULD BE INTERRUPTED UNTIL YOU PERFECT”
“They’re putting hundreds of these cars on our streets,” said Aaron Peskin, chairman of the San Francisco Supervisory Board. “They should stop doing this and work on it until they perfect this technology.” Using his statements, he added that he was concerned about the dangers that would be encountered in case of recurrence of the problem.
Police and firefighters also reportedly forwarded letters to the authorities expressing their concerns that self-driving vehicles could hinder emergency response teams.
CONFIRMED TO PREVENT EMERGENCY RESPONSE
The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that as of last week, 55 “self-driving vehicle” incidents had been recorded in 2023, hindering emergency responses.
