Mushrooms are more or less nature’s garbage collectors, they clean up dead wood and leaves, among other things. The mushroom itself, that which you see above the ground, is only the reproductive organ of a much larger fungus that resides below the ground. That system, the mycelium, causes a great deal of degradation of all kinds of material in the soil. The tree and the fungus that are together also benefit from each other. For example, the fungus gives minerals to the tree and the tree returns nutrients.
