Why is German TV so boring?

Why is German TV so boring

Despite dozens of free-to-air TV channels, it’s difficult to find anything exciting or new on German television while browsing. The greatest feeling is catching a 30-year-old favorite episode of The Simpsons on Pro Sieben.

In the Moviepilot podcast Streamgegefuehl, I set myself up as the TV executioner, while my colleague Hendrik Busch is the advocate for television. We discuss why German TV found itself in a downward spiral of cheap TV and a lack of ideas even before Netflix & Co. and why so many are still tuning in.

Crime novels, crime novels, crime novels and Heidi Klum: What is the reason for the incessant increase in cheap TV and docu-soaps?

If you turn on the television at 9 am on a Saturday, you get the feeling that Germany only consists of criminal cases, house renovations and people who collect something. In between, repeats of CSI run 70 times a week. And its spinoffs. And the repeats of the repeats.

There are good and sad reasons for the never-ending increase in cheap TV, gap fillers and shows in Season 25, which we explain in the podcast.

In the podcast we explain the 3 reasons why German television is at its lowest point

  • The much criticized TV program in Germany is the result of chronic lack of money, lack of ideas and recently the streaming competition. However, long before TikTok, before Netflix and maybe even before YouTube, there was a lack of easy purse and willingness to innovate. Then the internet and later Netflix came along just as a fire accelerator.

Society is getting older and has reached an average of 45 years in Germany. But how does that fit in with the fact that ARD and ZDF only average from over 60 years old be watched?

Younger people look for their entertainment on the Internet, which for many has long since replaced TV programs. So why aren’t there more offers on TV for 20-year-olds to lure them back there? Germany’s next top model by Heidi Klum shouldn’t be the answer to that.

All is not lost, for example at ProSieben

Many people turn on the TV out of habit, but many also turn it off nostalgia. What is tormenting repetitions for some is for others the warm immersion in cinema hits from childhood.

As a beacon of show content stands out Who steals the show from me? with Joko Winterscheidt at ProSieben. In contrast, the film and series in-house productions (most recently with Der Schwarm) seem to have given up in terms of quality. Babylon Berlin cannot last forever as a prime example of successful German TV productions.

When a football World Cup or the Eurovision Song Contest is on, television is occasionally allowed to play to its greatest strength: unite us all in front of the tv, at the exact same time, as a small part of something larger. Streaming still can’t do that.
