By now we all probably know that Henry Cavill’s days as Geralt of Rivia are over, as Liam Hemsworth will take on that role in season 4 of The Witcher. It’s still unknown how this recast will be handled in the Netflix series, but producer Tomasz Baginski may have missed something.
Tomasz Baginski made statements about the Witcher series
In a recent interview with the Polish publication Wyborcza, Baginski said, “Many book readers forget what Andrzej Sapkowski did in the fifth volume of the series. For me, this is one of the most important things in the whole story. I’m not talking about specific events, but the story framework introduced in this book is very important. Suddenly “We learn at the beginning of the book that what we have read so far may not be true.”
Baginski added, “Everything turned upside down and suddenly became a postmodern production that plays with everything. It was something that was supposed to be fantastic, but it turned into a philosophical discussion on the nature of reality. In this context, the world Andrzej Sapkowski built was for me. it seems to be one of the most resilient of all the fantasy worlds,” he added.
There will be no Witcher multiverse
So, in short, there will be no Witcher multiverse. Instead, it looks like we can give a more meta explanation to the change in Geralt’s appearance, with a story structure from the series turning upside down to reflect another story within the story. However, the Witcher community isn’t too sure about Baginski’s comments. “It doesn’t matter if Geralt is played by Henry or Liam,” said one Reddit user.
That said, most viewers seem adamant when they don’t need an explanation. Another Reddit user even wrote, “Absolutely weird, this isn’t the first time an actor has been replaced in a movie/show. But it’s really the first time I’ve heard of someone asking for an explanation as to why this actor looks different.” “There are even TV shows or movies where the new version is nothing like the original.”
