For those who sleep through the night, there’s a gangster movie masterpiece that sees the Goodfellas trio at their best again: Martin Scorsese’s Casino, starring Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, is on TV.

Casino was inspired by a real story

Scorsese once again collaborated on Casino with writer Nicholas Pileggi, who penned the template for GoodFellas: Three Decades in the Mafia. This time the two adapted Pileggi’s factual book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas, which tells how the mafia made money from the boom in the gambling metropolis in the 1970s.

The story centers on “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro), who is sent to Nevada by the gangsters to run the new casino in Tangiers. Together with his man for the rough (Joe Pesci), he enforces the criminal interests, but private and professional complications cloud the paradise in which the dollars flow.

De Niro was inspired by Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, while Sharon Stone plays a fictionalized version of his wife, Geri McGee. Stone received some of the best reviews of her career for her performance and an Oscar nomination.

While Casino doesn’t enjoy the same cult status as Goodfellas, it does impress as a further development of Scorsese’s Confrontation with the existence of gangsters as a gloomy vision of advancement within American society. In Casino, he goes a few steps further to show the gap between self-portrayal and the brutal reality of Ace and co.
