A vacation at no cost? Sounds like a joke, doesn’t it? Nevertheless, it is not the case. The French will indeed have the opportunity to visit Greece for free, and more precisely the famous and very popular island of Rhodes. It has recently been affected by serious fires, spoiling the holidays of many tourists. Many have been discouraged by this situation, which is why the Greek government wants to rebuild trust and restore this little paradise on earth.
Who can benefit from this free stay in Rhodes?
For years, tourism has been Greece’s main economic driver, helping the country emerge from the crisis. The recent fires have unfortunately affected the image of the country, and many people could decide, for safety reasons, to opt for another destination in the months to come. Some might even hesitate to choose Rhodes or other Greek islands for their future holidays.
Faced with this, the Greek government wants to offer a free stay for those whose holidays have been disrupted by these fires. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Micotakis told British television ITV that, together with local authorities, they will offer a free one-week stay in Rhodes in the spring or autumn of next year for tourists who have had to flee the island in July because of the fires. This means that the French, who have lived through difficult times, will have a new opportunity to visit Rhodes. Details are not yet known, especially concerning the support by travel agencies or if the tourists will have to organize everything by themselves. If so, the idea of ”free” might have its limits.
This year, bad weather over much of France and high prices have led many holidaymakers to express their dissatisfaction. This could push them to go abroad in 2024. And we can understand them. Many countries offer vacations at more affordable rates, even including transportation. The quality of services is often superior and, above all, good weather is more guaranteed.
