Anyone who doubted the success of Avatar 2: The Way of Water was quickly taught otherwise. Behind the first Avatar film and Avengers: Endgame is James Cameron’s sci-fi sequel, which has grossed over $2.3 billion worldwide third highest grossing film in cinema history.
For Disney, the Avatar 2 success story continues, because the film has now cracked another milestone for the company.
Avatar 2 is Disney’s most successful digital release
Avatar 2 is now the most successful digital release of the group ever. According to CBR, Disney stated this in an annual report call for third-quarter earnings. Specific numbers were not given.
Variety reported in July that the sci-fi blockbuster racked up a whopping 1.9 billion minutes of streams in the first five days following its Disney+ and Max release in early June.
While Avatar 2 begs the big screen for the perfect movie experience, Cameron’s sequel is a definite home theater hit too.
We’ll have to wait longer for Avatar 3
As announced in mid-June, the original start date of the next Avatar part had to be postponed. The reason is the high technical effort for the sci-fi franchise, which takes a long time.
Instead of December 2024 is coming Avatar 3 now on December 17, 2025 to the cinema. Avatar 4 will then follow four years later on December 19, 2029, while we have to wait until December 17, 2031 for Avatar 5.
