Brant OPP kept busy over the civic holiday long weekend

Brant County OPP officers charged numerous drivers with a range of offenses over the August long weekend.

In total, Brant officers laid 65 charges including two for impaired driving, Const. Conrad Vitalis said in a statement released Wednesday.

Officers charged 31 drivers with speeding, one with stunt driving and six people were charged for failing to wear a seatbelt. Four drivers were charged with distracted driving and one was charged for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle or tow truck, Vitalis said.

OPP officers also laid 20 other charges, he added.

Ontario’s move over law requires drivers to slow down, move over, if safe to do so, and proceed with caution when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with its emergency lights activated.

If the highway has more than one lane, the law requires the driver to move over and leave space between their vehicle and the parked emergency vehicle or tow truck if it can be done safely. The law came into effect in 2003.

Motorists charged under the “move over” law facing a $490 to $2,000 fine and three demerit points if convicted.

Brant County officers also investigated 10 collisions over the long weekend and say one of the collisions resulted in serious injuries.

The charges were part of a Civic Holiday weekend traffic campaign that began Aug. 4 and continued to Aug. 7.
