SMHI issues new red warnings: Starting to approach records

The heavy rainstorm “Hans” has invaded Sweden.

– In the southern parts of the country there is a warning of heavy amounts of rain, which until tomorrow morning and tomorrow morning can give rise to over 70 millimeters in some places, says TV4’s meteorologist Peter Kondrup.

Starting tonight, Svealand and southern and central Norrland can expect the arrival of rain. And until Thursday afternoon, the amount of rain builds up, above all in the western parts of Götaland and Svealand.

– In several places, we can get over 100 millimetres, which is more rain than you normally get in a whole month.

On Tuesday, the low pressure starts to gain momentum over the southern parts of Götaland and blows up with really strong winds, especially on the west coast, Kondrup predicts.

– The low pressure can be the lowest air pressure for a long time. We are starting to approach the record for August.

Emergency services: 500 on standby

The emergency services around the country are doing what they can to prepare for the rainy weather.

– We have 500 people on standby in the event of basically anything. So we have a very large force at our disposal, says Per-Ove Staberyd.

Since the heavy showers can be very localized, it is difficult for the emergency services to prepare more than that.

– It is not possible to prepare or work ahead of time. It does not work. But ultimately we have state resources to draw on if we are hit hard, and MSB is responsible for that, says Per-Ove Staberyd.

What do you want to urge the public?

– The first is the traffic. Reduce speed as soon as there are large flows. And then everyone has to look over their property and properties so that it doesn’t come as a surprise so that you don’t ask for help too late.

New red warnings

On Saturday, SMHI issued red warnings for heavy rain and high water flows in Värmland, Västergötland and Östergötland. During Sunday morning, the warning was lowered to yellow.

Niklas Hjerdt is a hydrologist at SMHI. He believes that there was no longer any support for the red warnings.

– Yesterday on the forecasts it looked like there would be more heavy rain at the beginning, but today we see reductions in the beginning. The response will therefore come a little later. Therefore, there was no reason to remain with a red warning over Monday, says Niklas Hjerdt, hydrologist at SMHI.

Now, however, SMHI has issued new red warnings for high flows and extremely high flows in Eastern and Northern Västergötland, Dalsland, Southern Värmland, Western Småland and Western Närke. Very large amounts of rain are expected there on Tuesday and Wednesday.

– There we have warnings for extremely high flows, which means flows that return every 50 years or even less often, says TV4’s meteorologist Peter Kondrup.
