Acclaimed film about one of the worst serial killers of

The Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer, which was as haunting as it was criticized, triggered a real hype about the serial killer at the end of last year. Between 1978 and 1991, he killed a total of 17 people and partially ate them. My friend Dahmer tells a no less impressive story exclusively about Jeffrey Dahmer’s high school days.

So far there has only been an English Blu-ray and DVD version of the unusual youth film starring Ross Lynch. Since August 4th you can get the Blu-ray in German save at Amazon for home cinema *. Alternatively, there is a stream to buy or rent on Amazon Prime Video *.

That’s what Mein Freund Dahmer is about

Derf (Alex Wolff) has a classmate named Jeffrey Dahmer (Ross Lynch) at Revere High School in Ohio in the late 1970s receives attention. Jeffrey is increasingly attracting attention with pranks and other failures, whereupon classmates set up a “Dahmer fan club” to motivate him to do more.

This gives the young Dahmer a certain acceptance, while he otherwise introspects his fascination with animal carcasses and violent fantasies. When the young man realizes that he is homosexual, he tries to numb it with alcohol. In the process, a young man who jogs past his parents’ house every day becomes a distorted object of his desire and Dahmer inexorably heads for the crisis that turned him from human to monster.

My friend Dahmer: True story with good criticism
The adaptation of the film is based on the 2012 published autobiographical graphic novel My Friend Dahmer by former classmate John “Derf” Backderf and was in 2014 as a screenplay adaptation by Marc Meyers on the so-called Black List of the best, but originally unproduced screenplays.

Christoph Petersen from Filmstarts reviewed the film in 2017 Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars as good: “‘My Friend Dahmer’ doesn’t avoid all serial killer and high school clichés, but it is still more original and independent than most other entries in the corresponding genres.” The film is also well rated in the Moviepilot community with a rating of 6.5.
