Sweden and the USA made WC history

The previous record figure was recorded during the World Cup in Canada in 2015, when 1,353,506 people bought tickets for the 52 matches of the tournament.

After Sunday’s Round of 16 between Sweden and the United States in Melbourne, the 52nd of this year’s World Cup (which has been expanded from 24 to 32 teams), 1,367,037 people have been present in the stadiums in New Zealand and Australia.

There are an average of 26,289 spectators per match, compared to 26,261 per match during the 2015 World Cup, writes the International Football Association (Fifa) in an email to TT.

Another difference between the World Cup in Canada and the last two World Cups is that in 2015 tickets were sold that included two matches in the same arena, which is believed to have salted the attendance figures as it was not possible to buy entry to just one match.

The Sweden-USA match is in progress.
