“Quite disappointing”: Zack Snyder is still bothered by the harsh criticism of his fantasy flop 12 years later

Sucker Punch was Zack Snyder’s (300, Zack Snyder’s Justice League) first film based on his own screenplay. The unlimited fantasy action with Orcs, zombies, samurai and a group of powerful women in a psychiatric ward did not find much favor among critics in 2011. When the film opened in cinemas, many critics accused it of visually exploiting the bodies of his female characters and to cater to young men’s fantasies (via Variety). Snyder countered this in an interview with Variety:

The main criticism was that the film was too exploitative. People thought it was all about the girls fights. I thought that was pretty

disappointing. […] The film tells the audience exactly [dass er ihnen zeigen wird,] what they want to see. you want to don’t see the girls as strong characters, but in sexy outfits. [Der Vorwurf der Ausbeutung] was interesting. As if an anti-war film would have captured the war too well.

Part of Snyder’s frustration also seems to stem from not being able to stage his originally scheduled finale. There the film ends with a disturbingly happy dance scene the main character Baby Doll (Emily Browning), as Snyder explains in the interview.
