Open the gilded chest in the Owlbear Den

MyMMO tells you how to open Selûne’s Gilded Chest in the Owlbear Cave in Baldur’s Gate 3 without dying.

Open Gilded Chest of Selûne – Quick Guide:

  • Enter the Owlbear Cave right next to the entrance to the Guardian’s Cave by the Emerald Forest.
  • Take the path on the left to the chest and the statue of Selûne. Jump over the crevice and pick up the prayer behind the statue.
  • Stand in front of the chest and read the prayer from your inventory. Here is the guide in pictures:

    • How to open the chest: Early in Baldur’s Gate 3 you will find an injured priest named Edowin and his two acolytes on the street. You learn that they were attacked by an owl bear.

    The corresponding cave is just a few steps away across the river. If you enter the cave, your character will quickly realize that the owl bears are still there. These creatures are legendary in D&D and actually extremely dangerous.

    In the left passage of the cave you will find a statue with a gilded chest in front of it. An Arcana throw will tell you that the chest is enchanted. Don’t open it yet! Otherwise you will take a lot of damage. Instead, do the following:

  • Jump over the small chasm (Y key).
  • Look behind the Selûne statue in the rubble for a “Selûni Prayer Note.” Shadowheart has a snarky comment and wants to stop you. Ignore her.
  • Return to the chest and open your inventory.
  • Use the “Read” function on the note and you can open the chest without dying.

    Investigate Owlbear Den without dying

    If you explore the cave a little further, you will find a mother owl bear and her chicks – or whatever the children are called by the beasts. She doesn’t attack you right away because she’s hurt. So that she doesn’t kill you, you have two options:

  • A successful Handle Animal check
  • the spell (or potion) “talk to animals”

    • The owl bear then warns you, but lets you go. You can even explore a little more in the cave, but you must not get too close to her egg, otherwise she will attack. Tip: each character in the group can talk to her again “from the beginning”.

    The fight against the owl bear isn’t too hard either. Since she’s already injured, she rarely hits and takes a lot of damage. You can easily kill them, but that makes you chicks very sad. You can choose to kill it as well or spare it.

    The brutal variant is particularly worthwhile for greedy players: you still get good, medium-heavy armor to start with and a decent amount of gold for the egg.
