Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, various studios tried their luck with comic book adaptations and brought in the process extremely different results out in the open While X-Men the Movie and Spider-Man paved the way for today’s superhero movies, 1998’s Blade emerged as an untamed beast.
This Marvel blockbuster is anything but family cinema. On the contrary: In Germany it came Mixture of horror and action with an FSK 18 to the cinema, which is mainly due to the many blood spatters that regularly fly through the picture. Marvel wouldn’t dare make a movie like that anymore…or would it?
25 years after Wesley Snipes’ Marvel debut: Marvel plans new Blade movie, but everything goes wrong
In fact, a Blade reboot has been in the works for some time. After Wesley Snipes played the vampire hunter in the first three films, Mahershala Ali brings the character to the MCU. Ali brings Marvel experience to the table: he played Luke Cage in the Netflix series Villain Cottonmouth. His blade, however, faces huge problems.

Ali’s Blade casting was revealed back in 2019. However, to date, filming has not started. This is partly due to the fact that the production completely rebuilt several times became. The first version of Blade was to be directed by Bassam Tariq from a script by Stacy Osei-Kuffour.
In 2021, Tariq rose due to creative differences out, so Yann Demange was hired as backup director. Michael Starrbury was brought in as the new screenwriter before Nic Pizzolatto was brought in earlier this year to revise the screenplay. And then came the double strike in Hollywood.
Blade was originally slated to hit theaters in November 2023. Now it is questionable whether the first take has actually fallen by then. Marvel is currently planning a release in February 2025, but this date is also becoming increasingly unlikely. At least we could hear Ali’s Blade as a short voice cameo at the end of Eternals.

Until the new Blade hits theaters, we’ll be able to revisit the Blade movies starring Wesley Snipes more often. The first part airs tonight, July 31, 2023, at 11:00 p.m. at Kabel Eins. The cut FSK-16 version is shown. The repetition at night at 3:20 a.m. has also been cut.
