On Monday, Hungary will vote on Sweden’s NATO application.
The governing party Fidesz is expected to boycott the meeting, according to Hungarian HVG.
– They don’t want this to be something that is done at the initiative of the opposition, says Anamaria Dutceac Segesten, lecturer in European studies at Lund University to TV4 Nyheterna.
Hungary will soon raise the issue of ratifying Sweden’s application to join NATO. According to the parliament’s agenda, a vote is scheduled for Monday, July 31, writes Omni.
The agenda item where the Swedish application is to be processed has been requested by Speaker László Kövér following demands from the opposition. The meeting in parliament will take place at 1:00 p.m.
“Is about internal politics”
According to the Hungarian independent news site HVG, the ruling Fidesz party will most likely boycott the meeting. According to HVG, this means that the meeting’s agenda cannot be approved, which in turn would mean that the vote cannot take place.
– This is very little about Sweden and very much about internal politics in Hungary in this case. The game between the opposition and the governing parties but also the relationship between Hungary and Turkey, says Anamaria Dutceac Segesten.
In connection with the NATO summit in Vilnius, both Hungary and Turkey stated that they will approve the Swedish application this autumn. Dutceac Segesten believes that both countries’ approval will happen at about the same time.
– I don’t think there will be any big difference between the time when Hungary approves the application and when Turkey approves the application. It is possible that Hungary will vote a few weeks before Turkey, but we are not talking about months.
