Bye, Geralt! The Witcher season 3 gives Henry Cavill a perfect ending, although at first everything looked like a total disaster

I shed a few tears at the end of The Witcher Season 3. After 24 episodes, the moment has come. Henry Cavill’s very last scene as Geralt of Rivia flickers across my TV. It’s the end of an era. Because from season 4, Liam Hemsworth will grumble across the continent as a witch. I was very afraid that this casting meltdown would overshadow the finale.

I had many questions before the start of the final three episodes of season 3. How will Henry Cavill say goodbye to the series? Will there even be a worthy conclusion, even if the exit was only announced after filming was completed? And will I be presented with a complicated solution for the recast to Liam Hemsworth? Now we have the answers – and a perfect farewell.

The Witcher season 3 gives everything again

Henry Cavill’s departure is more painful than I feared. For a good reason: Season 3 is the best so far, despite some small fantasy problems. Not only did the first episodes inspire with the touching dynamics of the witcher family, but also the most exciting character development for Geralt to date. The grand finale now delivers one highlight after the other with its three completely different episodes.

In the last three episodes, the cast of the Netflix series has been playing their hearts out. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Ciri (Freya Allan), Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) or supporting characters like Delphinium (Joey Batey), Tissaia (MyAnna Buring) and even Fringilla (Mimi Ndiweni): They all lead us through highly emotional ones Moments that touch, grip and shake. For Henry Cavill, the finale ultimately becomes a best-of of his character Geralt.

During the Thanedd heist, Geralt engages in one of the best-choreographed duels of the entire series. In the course of his subsequent healing cure in Brokilon Forest, we are presented with both his vulnerable and his resilient side – and even a few final grumpy jokes.

Finally, the emotional highlight of Cavill’s farewell performance is a final scene between Geralt and Yennefer. When the sorceress tears away with the words “Tell me we’ll meet again” Saying goodbye to her lover, the moment is doubly sad. That Anya Chalotra didn’t know at the time that this would be her last scene with Henry Cavill is unbelievable.

Although Geralt’s story in Henry Cavill’s final episodes is marked by great losses and defeats, he is allowed a heroic farewell. In the end, he’s no longer the dejected witcher dad who lost his daughter, but a cold-blooded and downright terrifying foe for anyone who stands in his family’s way. And its final scene couldn’t be a better conclusion to The Witcher’s Cavill era.

The Witcher finds the perfect send-off for Henry Cvill, even though it wasn’t planned

Yes, Henry Cavill’s exit from the series caught us all off guard. Above all, the creative people behind the series. Then Season 3 was long overdue when the news broke. So (fortunately) there is no answer as to why Geralt will look slightly different in the future. The last Geralt moments belong to Henry alone. Even if it was not planned, the last episode unintentionally succeeds in a perfect farewell.

In Geralt’s last scene, the series actually closes a thematic arc that leads back to the very first episode of the Netflix series: He finally gives up his neutrality. At the beginning of the series, Geralt got caught between the bandit Renfri and the shady wizard Stregobor. His decision cost the life of the woman he had previously fallen in love with. From then on he wore her brooch on his sword as a reminder of the cost of meddling in the affairs of the people.

At the end of season 3 he is again faced with a decision: Helping a refugee family and putting yourself at risk, or staying out of conflict again to protect yourself? This time Geralt decides to intervene. He does not let injustice happen and slaughters his way through a group of corrupt Nilfgaard tax collectors.

Afterwards he embarks on a new adventure together with Dandelion and the new archer Milva (Meng’er Zhang): traveling to Nilfgaard to rescue Ciri. On the battlefield, he leaves Renfri’s brooch behind – representing his old self and the identity of the grumpy witcher who stays out of it all.

The old Geralt no longer exists. He now has a family. He has people who mean something to him. And he really has something to lose. With this Completed three seasons of character development Henry Cavill says goodbye to the series.

Henry Cavill’s end makes way for a completely changed Geralt

The end of season 3 is a huge upheaval within the Netflix series and seems like the end of a long chapter before a new one begins in Season 4. For 24 episodes we watched Geralt of Rivia search, find and lose a family.

Just like Henry Cavill, The Witcher series also says goodbye to a version of Geralt that brought us into this fantasy world with grumbling one-liners, steamy bathtub eroticism and a whole lot of charm. Over the course of three seasons, the seemingly callous mutant underwent major changes and found his humanity.

If The Witcher continues with Season 4 in the future, we will meet a whole new Geralt, not only played by a new actor, but also hardly anything in common with the witcher from seasons 1-3 except for the white wig and hopefully much too tight leather pants again.

Certainly it will be challenging for many fans to get used to Geralt 2.0. But let’s be honest: The witcher is no longer the only important and exciting main character. I’m already more looking forward to Ciris and Yennefer’s new challenges than to Geralt’s road trip across the war-torn continent. I will still miss Henry Cavill.
