Netflix has celebrated a great success with the anime adaptation of Castlevania. Now the anime is getting its own spin-off called Castlevania: Nocturne, which will take place in a different time. The protagonist is also different this time.
What is Castlevania: Nocturne about? The action jumps to France in 1792, many years after the first seasons of Castlevania. This is when the French Revolution takes place.
This time we see the action not from Trevor Belmont, but from his descendant Richter Belmont. The family specializes in hunting vampires and with the looming threat of a vampire army, the sorceress Annette seeks out the vampire hunter Richter to stop the vampires.
You can see the corresponding Netflix trailer here. But you should only watch it if you can deal with violent scenes:
Also joining the troupe is the magician Maria Renard, who fights both French nobility and elite vampires. Annette, on the other hand, comes from the Caribbean and was previously enslaved by the vampires.
As the anime progresses, more and more allies join the squad. It gets particularly interesting when the vampire Olrox joins the group. He is responsible for the death of Richter’s mother, but has to work with his nemesis at times.
Netflix trailer is extremely brutal
The accompanying trailer already shows how brutal the series will be. Lots of blood squirts and rows of heads fly off bodies. So only watch the trailer if you can take such brutal scenes.
The trailer also hints at Richter’s mother being killed. The vampire responsible for the death promises Richter that one day he will kill him too.

When is the anime coming out? Castlevania: Nocturne is scheduled to launch on September 28, 2023, exclusively on Netflix. The season will consist of eight episodes, which – as is typical for anime – will run around 25 minutes.
Castlevania’s previous seasons have been extremely well received by audiences. For example, on Rotten Tomatoes, the series was able to score 90 out of 100%. If the spin-off is as successful as the main series, we can look forward to a terrific series.
