Blocked port – Thunberg in court

It was on June 19 this year that Greta, together with several other climate activists from the Take Back the Future movement, tried to block the entrance and exit for tankers at the Oil Harbor in Malmö.

According to the indictment, Greta Thunberg has refused to obey the police’s order to leave the scene. Two other people who participated in the action have also been charged with disobedience to law enforcement. They will be arraigned later in August.

Gets support from the movement

Greta Thunberg will personally be present during the trial in Malmö together with some other people from Take back the future. Irma Kjellström is one of them:

“I will be there to support Greta,” she tells TT.

In a comment, Take Back the Future writes that they do not intend to wait but do what they can to stop the use of fossil fuels.

“If the court chooses to see it as a crime, let it do so – we know that we have a right to live and that the fossil fuel industry stands in the way of that right,” the comment reads.

From school strike to world celebrity

Greta Thunberg gained attention for her sit-in demonstrations outside the Riksdag House before the 2018 election. The demonstrations have since become a worldwide movement that goes by the name “School strike for the climate” or “Fridays for Future”.

Since then, she has traveled the world to participate in meetings and demonstrations. One of her most noted is the trip by sailboat across the Atlantic. Where she gave an emotional speech in front of the world leaders at the UN climate summit in New York 2019.

In the same year, she was named the world’s most influential person by the American magazine Time.
