The 5 best anime movies that everyone should see

You want to spend an anime evening with me, but don’t feel like watching entire series? We have some top movies for you that will satisfy your anime hunger.

Anime is a great medium – and sometimes very time-consuming. You don’t always have the time or desire to get involved in 12, 24, 48 or even more episodes. Sometimes you just want a condensed experience that you can see through in one evening – a good movie.

There are also plenty of pearls in the anime sector, and we would like to introduce you to a handful of them.

your name

Alternative names: Kimi no na wa
Genres: Drama, Supernatural
Stream available on: Crunchy roll

While the girl Mitsuha dreams of the great life in the big city, Taki longs for a quieter life in the country. The dream comes true when the two seem to swap bodies in their dreams, though the memory quickly fades. Through diary entries, they manage to save some memories – until their dreams suddenly end. Taki sets out to find Mitsuha… but it’s difficult.

What to do with Your Name. should expect: your name starts out as a fun “body swap story” like you’ve seen countless times before. But this cliché quickly dissolves and develops into an exciting story in which Taki and Mitsuha have to solve significantly more problems in order to finally be able to meet each other. The less you know about this film beforehand, the better it is.

A Silent Voice

Alternative names: The Shape of Voice, Koe no Katachi
Genres: drama
Stream available on: Currently no streaming provider known, only available for purchase.

At school, Shouya Ishida has a perfect way to kill boredom: he bullies the deaf Shouko for fun. The rest of the class joins in. But when Shouko’s mother contacts the school, the class turns against Shouya, blaming him as the sole culprit. From there, he is the next victim of bullying and becomes an outsider.

Many years later at college, Shouya accidentally meets Shouko again – and sees it as an opportunity to make up for past mistakes.

What to expect from A Silent Voice: A Silent Voice is not only a story about physical limitations, but also about bullying – and what that does to victims and perpetrators. How quickly a one-time perpetrator becomes a victim himself and how quickly the group dynamic can turn against a new target is also part of the plot, as are some tougher themes.

A Silent Voice is worthwhile for anyone who even remotely sympathizes with the style of anime. And many a person will surely discover parallels to their own school days…
