Michael Herbig wrote German cinema history with Der Schuh des Manitou. The star and director, better known as Bully, delivered a hit with the western parody, whose success is unmatched to this day. Manitu’s shoe still holds the German cinema attendance record to this day
With the comedy, Bully parodied the well-known Karl May film adaptations of the 1960s, which are mainly about the stories about the Apache chief Winnetou. In Manitou’s Shoe, this becomes Abahachi and his homosexual twin brother, Winnetouch, who plays Bully in a dual role.
Since its launch in 2001, Manitou’s Shoe has attracted visitors 11.7 million people to date to the movies. According to InsideKino, this makes the comedy the most popular German film of all time.
Today, Manitou’s Shoe would certainly be continued with such success. Herbig went a different way at the time and decided to expand another parody segment of his bully parade into a feature film.
In 2004 the film Traumschiff Surprise – Period 1 was released, in which, among other things, the sci-fi cult Starship Enterprise is satirized. With over 9 million cinema-goers this comedy also became a box-office hit.
