Fighting between Myanmar’s military junta and rebel groups has flared up in recent days in the states of Sagaing and Magway regions.
According to villagers, at least 14 people were killed in a raid carried out by the junta-led military in the early hours of Friday morning. Six of the victims were said to have been members of the PDF while the rest were civilians.
Armed resistance groups against the military rule have been formed under the collective name PDF and, among other things, have collaborations with certain local militias that have long fought against the military.
A military source confirms to AFP that fighting and raids against the PDF are ongoing in the Sagaing and Magway regions.
It is very difficult for journalists to gain access to the affected areas, which makes it difficult to verify the information.
Myanmar has been in political and humanitarian crisis since the popularly elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi was overthrown in a military coup on 1 February 2021, ending the country’s brief period of democracy.
Widespread protests have been violently suppressed by the military junta and over 3,000 people have been killed and over 20,000 arrested since the military coup.
