The James Bond series has taken cinema’s most famous spy to the world’s most exotic locations. At one point, however, the series is so aloof that the secret agent even ended up in space. We’re talking about James Bond 007 – Moonraker – Top Secret, with which the Bond franchise tie in with the sci-fi hits of the time wanted. For many, the 007 part that airs on ProSieben on Friday is silly science fiction trash these days.
Who knows what Moonraker would have looked like if Steven Spielberg had directed the film? In any case, at the time he also wanted to be behind the camera for the Bond franchise, but nothing came of it.
Steven Spielberg wasn’t allowed to make Bond
According to the Independent, the director spoke on the BBC Radio 2 show about twice phoning Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli at the time. After the great success of Jaws, he hoped to be creatively free. However, Broccoli had to disappoint Spielberg by telling him he wasn’t the right choice to direct Bond.
After the success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the director wanted to make another Bond film, but he did Spielberg could no longer afford the studio.
The time of the conversations between him and Broccoli at that time was, among other things, the late 70s. Since Moonraker was released in 1979, the controversial sci-fi Bond was a potential Spielberg-007.
