Maria Schrader proved two years ago that the Germans, who are less known for their genre entertainment, can also make science fiction films and with Ich bin dein Mensch she delivered a stroke of luck for German sci-fi cinema. Today the robot romance is on TV.
The sci-fi stroke of genius I’m your human on TV today
The scientist Alma (Maren Eggert) urgently needs new research funds in the sci-fi excursion from I am yours and is the only reason why she agrees to an experiment: In order to get the necessary finance approved, she is supposed to get one on them in return customized dating robot testing: Tom (Dan Stevens), whose sole function is to make her happy.

German Sci-Fi: I am your human
Alma can’t do much with candlelight romance and overzealous love services and anyway doesn’t believe that feelings can be squeezed into algorithms. But I am your human would not be Sci-Fi romantic comedy, if the sparks didn’t fly at some point. Which can quickly get complicated on both a robot and human level.
Why the feat of German sci-fi in I am your human succeeds
I’m your human doesn’t need big sci-fi effects or flying cars to make one successful vision of the future to draw. A few futuristic buildings in Berlin and a wonderfully wooden-acting Downton Abbey star with a British accent are enough to convincingly sell the idea (not so far from a dating app) of an adaptive partner robot.
The rest of the sci-fi film takes place in the friction of the brilliant lead duo: the lovestruck robot and the researcher with the dry sense of humor. Laughing about man-machine relationships and German bureaucracy are pre-programmed here.

But the depth is not lost in the circuits of I am your human being, because under all the jokes there are hidden more serious questions after being alone, dealing with our loved ones as a projection screen for our own wishes and striving for happiness as a human meaning in life. Nobody should miss how Maria Schrader pours all of this into a sci-fi film with ease and sensitivity.
