The 2023 FIFA World Cup is underway and on Sunday the Swedish ladies will play their first match.
Despite a good confidence, the players believe that it could be the toughest championship ever.
– When we bring out our best capacity, we are a top nation and of course we are very hungry for the finest medal, says center back star Linda Sembrant.
The Women’s Soccer World Cup in New Zealand is underway. Today, the premiere match is played between Norway and the host country. More exciting for us, however, is Sweden’s first match against South Africa on Sunday.
The national team’s Olivia Schough and Linda Sembrant say that they enter the championship with confidence.
– We have a strong belief in ourselves. We know that if we make it work the way we want, it can go as well as it wants and all the way. And of course that is our goal and what we want. But there are an incredible number of good teams in this championship, says striker Olivia Schough.
“Toughest championship so far”
Linda Sembrant says that football has progressed in recent years, which means that several of the teams have also become much better.
– When we bring out our best capacity, we are a top nation and of course we are very hungry for the finest medal. But it will probably be the toughest championship so far with so many teams that have become so good now. But it is very exciting and incredibly cool to experience something like this, she says.
Always in semi-finals and finals
Football commentator Daniel Kristiansson tells us that Sweden is a strong team that always believes in themselves. He doesn’t think you can complain about the team selection that Peter Gerhardsson and Magnus Wikman have done.
– Everyone thinks differently about the squad, but they are always in the semi-finals and finals, so it’s hard to say that it’s the wrong team. It is a squad that is seasoned and experienced.
They take home the entire championship
Daniel Kristiansson thinks we will win against South Africa on Sunday. After that match we play against Italy on July 29th and then Argentina on August 2nd. Daniel Kristiansson believes that Sweden will advance from the group stage.
– If Sweden advances, we will have to face the USA or the Netherlands in a round of 16 final. If we get the USA we win, if we get the Netherlands I think we’ll be cod, because I think the Netherlands will take home the whole WC tournament. That’s my tip.
