Apple can’t wait to release iOS 16.6 as it made three attempts to fix a serious WebKit vulnerability in iOS 16.5.
Apple knew that the bug was actively exploited and could cause arbitrary code execution, which could allow an attacker to steal your personal data. That’s why iOS 16.5.1 and iPadOS 16.5.1 were released. However, Apple stopped the release of both versions due to some bugs found in the software.
Apple tried three times to fix the vulnerability in iOS 16.5
With the Quick Security Response system, Apple released iOS 16.5.1 (a) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) instead of developing iOS 16.5.2 and iPadOS 16.5.2. But two updates changed the user browser for mobile Safari. The user browser tells everything about the device’s browser so that the server knows which version of the site to serve. For example, it tells the server to show the mobile or desktop version of a site, or the US or UK version of the site. The bugs also prevented iPhone and iPad users from accessing sites like Zoom, Facebook, and Instagram.
Apple has released the Release Candidate for iOS 16.6
When Apple knew how serious the vulnerability affecting WebKit was, it withdrew iOS 16.5.1 (a) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (a) and quickly replaced it with iOS 16.5.1 (c) and iPadOS 16.5.1 (c). This is where we are right now. However, the Release Candidate for iOS 16.6 was released to developers today, which means the update is probably less than a week away.
Release Candidate builds give beta testers the opportunity to test the final build of an update before it is released to most users. Apple continues to share its resources between the remaining builds of iOS 16 and the iOS 17 beta. This should end with the release of the stable version of iOS 17 in September.
