Heat stress?
High temperatures can cause heat stress in your body. This can even be fatal for the elderly. As you get older, the regulation of a stable body temperature during heat becomes less effective. “Last June it was also warm here in the Netherlands and the death rate was really hundreds of times higher,” says Van Essen.
The CBS figures also show this: in June there was excess mortality among the over-65s and residents of nursing homes and care institutions for the disabled. This means that the number of deaths was higher than can be explained by the usual fluctuations in the figures. Statistics Netherlands itself points to the heat: last month was the warmest June ever measured, about 3 degrees warmer than normal.
